My name is Susan. But you can call me Yergler.
That’s what the kiddos at school call me.
Or, sometimes: Ms. Yergler. Also: Ms. Yogurt. Teacher Lady. Queen of the Universe.
I’m a mom. I’m a writer. I’m a teacher.
I have taught just about every age, but my absolute favorite is middle grades. My former principal once called me “The Queen of Engagement” which is almost as good as being the Queen of the Universe. I am constantly seeking ways to draw my students in. If I can’t get their attention, how can I teach them?
But that’s not enough.
I seek to challenge, to inspire, to guide.
I want my students to find their voice, and to gain the confidence to use that voice. Nice and clear. And loud.
I want to give them an hour a day where they are safe. Where they can be their true selves. Where they can try new things. Where they can laugh and have fun.
I’m here, too, to encourage and support other teachers. This is the world’s most fulfilling job…except for when it’s not.
Some days, we are flying high on teacherly joy, completely confident that we are changing lives for the better. This is how we revolutionize the entire world.
Other days are filled with crushing disappointment and frustruation. We suffer from imposter syndrome. We are pretty sure we are going nowhere.
I’m here for you. I want to encourage you, to support you. I want to offer ideas for engagement, for reaching every learner. I want to help you understand when you’ve done enough; when it’s time to just go home at the end of the day.
Run a mile. Eat a burrito. Watch a little TV. Get some sleep, then come back.
Tomorrow.
Ready.
